CI Surgical Foundation Course

This course will be given in collaboration with the University's ENT Department, AZ Sint Augustinus, Antwerp, Belgium

Learning Outcomes:

This 2 ½ -day trainig will provide basic knowledge and skills required for CI surgery by means of a mixture of presentations and practical temporal bone sessions moderated by highly experienced European surgeons. The course will include a live surgery and offer all participants the possibility to practice drilling on real temporal bones, which is usually regarded as one of the highlights.  A question-and-answer session to deal with every aspect of the CI process is also part of the programme.

·           Surgical technique: from incision to electrode insertion, to closing of the wound

·           CI assessment, selection considerations and criteria

Hearing preservation workshop for surgeons

This course will be given in collaboration with Professor Thomas Lenarz, Medizinische Hochschule Hanover (MHH), Germany.

Learning Outcomes:

For recipients with low frequency hearing, the preservation of hearing is an important factor in the decision-making process. During this course, where the Nucleus Hybrid L24 cochlear implant will be used, training will consist of both presentations as well as extensive temporal bone drilling by all participants. The course will offer possibilities to share experiences of every aspect of hearing preservation surgery as well. A step-by-step plan of the surgery will be presented and will serve as a guideline for the temporal bone drilling.

At the end of the course, all participants will have received detailed information and hands-on training on how to preserve hearing best when performing a cochlear implantation using the Nucleus Hybrid L24 cochlear implant.

This course will provide information on:

  • candidacy criteria and selection considerations
  • the surgical procedure specific to optimal hearing preservation, featuring the Nucleus Hynrid L24 cochlear implant
  • the hybrid syste product portfolio

This two-day course will provide the core knowledge required to practice as a CI clinician. The format will be a mixture of presentations and practical sessions with the Nucleus clinical software.

This course will provide information on:

·         CI assessment, selection considerations and criteria

·         The complete Nucleus CI system product portfolio

·         Nucleus Custom Sound programming software, including practical sessions with recipients

·         The parameters to consider when programming the sound processor and the steps involved in initial and subsequent programming sessions

·         Troubleshooting the external equipment

·         The role of (re)habilitation at the pre-operative and post-operative stages of the CI process  

This course will be followed by the EP I Masterclass where the foundations of obtaining NRT-measurements will be discussed and practiced. We would strongly suggest to follow this one-day course after the introductory course.

How to Approach Complex CI Cases

Learning Outcomes:

Complex case discussions are increasingly popular and necessary to support the growing number of CI candidates/recipients with complex needs. While each case is unique, there are certain common characteristics and guidelines for case management that, based on scientific, technological and clinical evidence, may apply to all cases. This one-day course on how to approach complex CI cases requires interactive participation.

This course will provide information on:

·         How to identify important events, data, etc. from multiple sources

·         What investigations may be useful for specific issues

·         How a multidisciplinary approach may achieve an optimal resolution

·         How complex case management may be incorporated within general CI service planning  

Complex cases (meningitis, auditory neuropathy, additional disabilities, deaf-blind, …) will be presented, but participants are encouraged to bring their own complex CI cases to discuss during the workshop.
